Business information - key resources and search strategies

Coronavirus - please note that all face to face training sessions and workshops have been suspended

Business, government and official information sources are constantly changing as are search engines and the EU regulatory environment. All affect how information is presented and, under some circumstances, legislation may dictate that certain information must be excluded from search results. Furthermore, an increasing amount of data is being made freely available as "open data". How reliable and accessible are these datasets and can we safely cancel our subscription services? This one day workshop will look at recent developments in business information, key resources for different types of information, and how to use search tools effectively to ensure that we are picking up everything that is needed. It will  compare what is available free of charge with pay-as-you-go and subscription services, and what one can expect in terms of quality and functionality.

The workshop will benefit anyone who plans to use, or already uses, the Internet for gathering essential business information.

        Topics covered include:

        • how the legal and regulatory environment is affecting search and the accessibility of information
        • starting points, evaluated listings and government sources
        • company information: share prices, financials, official information
        • news sources and alerting services
        • how to use social media and professional networks for business intelligence
        • statistics, market data, open data
        • essential search techniques for tracking down business information
        • when "free" is no longer enough

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and will benefit anyone who plans to use, or already uses, the Internet for gathering business information.

This workshop is usually run as a full day, hands on event with opportunities for participants to experiment and try out the techniques for themselves. It can be condensed into a half day session or a seminar concentrating on key elements. Sections of this workshop can be presented as a webinar.
